Weekly Memo (August 26-30)
Establishing Class Rules
After a week of learning new routines, this week our class created our list of class rules. It’s important that students feel ownership of our classroom, so their ideas and input drove our discussion.
We began by brainstorming a list of "all the things good CAC students do to learn." After about 10 minutes, we had a pretty good list (click here to view). The list was then sorted to create our three classroom rules. After that, students created posters which are now hanging in our room to help us remember "all the good things CAC students do to learn."
With our rules set, students brainstormed what it looks like and what it sounds like to be respectful, responsible, and on task and here’s what we came up with:
Students then created posters for our classroom to help us remember what it looks like and what it sounds like to be respectful, responsible, and on task.
(Our final poster will be finished shortly.)
I was so pleased with our students and their work on our class rules. With these in place, our next step will be to establish the best way to consistently hold everyone accountable to following our class-created rules. We’ll do that next week, and I’m confident the class will work well together to finalize our expectations. With everything in place and everyone having a say in things, it’s going to be an outstanding year. I can’t wait!
