Weekly Memo (November 11-15)
Learning Responsibility
We did it! We made it through our first week of lockers, and what a ride it was! The first day was a mixture of excitement, some anxiety, and a little frustration. By Friday, the excitement was still there, but the anxiety and frustration had just about left.
Before we moved into the lockers, we practice our combinations and we walked through how to organize a locker (i.e., books should be vertical, spines facing out, books grouped together). Since then, we’ve worked mainly on the social aspects (i.e., not shouting, waiting for the person above/below to finish, not pushing, etc.) and being quick.
It’s been fun watching this whole process knowing how developing these skills now will help them at the secondary campus. When we went to the secondary campus for the matinee on Friday, I saw our kids eyeing the purple lockers in the hallway, and several asked me about them. The locker thing is a big deal for many of our kids, and I love that by practicing now, much of their anxiety will be lessened.
Practically, do we need to have lockers this year? No, not really.
Should we have lockers this year? Absolutely!
Even with a week of practice under our belts, I’m curious how many combinations I’ll have to look up tomorrow morning. But I guess that’s why we’re practicing, right?
What We’re Learning This Week (if all goes as planned)
I’ll mark each thing we get finished, and you can check back each day to see what we were able to get accomplished (and what we didn’t quite make it to).
