Weekly Memo (October 28-November 1)

Three Types of People

I've been in enough public bathrooms to know there are three types of people:

Those who throw paper towels on the floor of the bathroom.

Those who throw paper towels in the trashcan but don't notice the ones on the floor.

Those who throw paper towels in the trashcan and pick up the ones on the floor.

(I bet you're relieved I didn't go another direction with that opening statement of "being in enough public bathrooms to know there are three types of people"!)

As we're all raising our kids together, how cool would it be to raise a class of kids who throw their own paper towels in the trashcan and pick up the ones on the floor? Obviously, I'm not focused just on bathroom etiquette, but rather the overall attitude of personal responsibility and having a servant heart. I want our class-- and all classes at CAC-- to be self-aware, responsible, and empathetic, always looking for opportunities to help others.

Teaching and parenting go hand-in-hand, and neither is easy. Teaching opportunities abound for all of us, and even when it's easier to move right past those opportunities in our busy lives, it's critical we slow down and take the time to teach, correct, and give our kids the opportunity to do right. After all, as Andy Andrews says, "The goal isn't to raise great kids-- it's to raise kids who become great adults," and I want our kids to grow up to be adults who pick up the paper towels.
