Weekly Memo (January 27-31)

Great Minds (Don’t Always) Think Alike

Tomorrow our class will begin reading a new book together called Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. It’s a great story about a young girl (Ally) who has a hard time in school because she learns differently from others. In the book, we read about her struggles and get a peak into what it’s like to see the world through someone else’s eyes. We also learn about what it means to be a good friend, and how we all need to accept everyone— especially because we’re different. This book teaches so many lessons that are perfect for 5th graders (and for adults!), and I’m excited to read it alongside them.

We’ll be reading it in many different ways— as a class read aloud, listening to and reading along with the audiobook, in small groups, in pairs, and individually. Most of the reading will be done at school, but students may need to read some at home as well. I would encourage you to get a copy and read along with us to further the discussion at home.
